Learn To Be A Couponista!

by cindy on January 10, 2010

As promised I am starting the series called Learn To Be A Couponista. I hope by doing this  I can help you to really understand how saving money with coupon works. I have a passion to teach anyone  who wants to learn, how to coupon like a pro. Yes, I am coupon crazy and I love it. Those coupons that most people think are just paper are no different than the dollar bill in your hand. They are in fact the same when used correctly. So, lets get started playing the coupon game.

Lesson 1: Take advantage of price matching policy’s.

Price Matching Tips:

  • Take the competers ad with you to the store where  you want to do a price match.
  • Price matches have to be $ for $. They will not price match B1G1 Free items, % off items, or Drug Store promotions. For example Extra Care bucks at CVS, Register Rewards at Walgreens, or Single Check Rebates at Rite Aid.
  • You can use a coupon with a price match.
  • Know the stores price matching policy and take a copy with you to the store.

For Targets Price Matching Policy click here.

* Coupon etiquette: Please do not clear the shelves when you are getting a deal. I made sure I did not buy all of Walmart’s stock of Finish. They had over 50 boxes left when I left the store. I will talk more about this later.

I live in Summerville, GA and the grocery store selection is slim to none; therefore, I shop at Wal-Mart a lot and I price match. Wal-Mart will do B1G1 if you break it down for them. For instance at Bi-Lo this week they have Coffee Mate Refrigerated Creamer B1G1 at 2.29. When you divide $2.29 by 2 you come out with $1.14 and $1.15 which is the price of each item if you were price matching. I have done this and not had a problem. Just thought you might like to know this :)

Cindy – thanks so much for your blog! Your videos have taught me A Lot! I do have a question – I live in a very remote area…only stores are Safeway, City Mkt, Walmart and Walgreens. Do you think they would accept the Target coupons that come in the paper? Also, the dishwasher soap sale at Walgreens? do certain Walgreens stores pick and choose their sales? They were not marked on sale at ours??? Thanks again for all of your help!

Hi there,
I have just found your blog and watched your great video on the finish savings. Now, I have a question about buying coupons on ebay…how do you know they will be vaild, how do you know what coupons to buy when (without them expiring_before you get to use the deal), and how much do you spend on them before it is no longer a deal?
thank you so much!

I just make sure I get them from a seller with a good rating. 10% to 20% of the value is the going rate for most coupons. Truthfully it is like playing cards but I have always gotting mine before the sale is over. I just order no later than Monday. I wrote a post about buying coupons.

I really appreciate this video. I have a Drug Mart where I live and they do have some awesome deals every now and then. I did not know that price matching was still available in stores. Thank you for pointing out which stores still do. Just one question. Can I take any competitor ad from any store into WalMart or Target?
