Lession 4 Double Coupon 101:
There have been a lot of comments about some stores (Meijer) not doubling coupons that say do not double. So, I thought I should answer the question in the Learn to Be A Couponista series.
I am going to try to explain this the best I can. Any coupon that begins with the number 5 in the bar code should automatically double even if it says do not double on the top of the coupon. The computer automatically doubles it. I have photos taken below to show you why I say this is so.
Here is photo’s of $.55 coupon for Wonder Bread one is a printable coupon and the other is from a resent insert. The printable coupon does not state you can not double the coupon while the coupon from the insert states do not double. So, what’s the difference? Nothing!
Now take a look at the bar code that you scan to take the coupon value off your bill. Both numbers are exactly the same.

So, why would one coupon double and the other not? The truth is, it is all up to your cashier and store manager. Some cashiers will stop the computer from doubling the coupon even if the computer will allow it. I just think some cashiers are just not as coupon friendly as others. Do they have to double a coupon that states do not double on it? No, they don’t and we really can’t do anything about it. I have never had any problems with my coupons not doubling but I know others have. If you have a coupon problem you can always ask for a manager or just have them take the item off your bill. It’s just not worth getting upset over.
Stores double coupons in order to be more competitive. I shop at certain stores just because they double the value of my coupon. If they didn’t double my coupons I would just take my whole list to Walmart or Target have them price match the store with the lowest price and give them my coupons and my business.
Here is some food for thought. If stores are being reimbursed for the amount of the coupon doubled don’t you think all stores would double coupons? Doubling the amount of the coupon is a store policy and has nothing to do with the manufacture.
This is stated on almost every coupon I have seen.
“Retailer:….we will reimburse you for the face value of coupon plus $.08 handing.”
Never once have I seen a coupon state we will reimburse you double amount of coupon up to $1 plus $.08 handling.
Note: These are just my personal opinions on double coupons. Always check your stores coupon policy for more information.

….what about coupons that say "75cents off product X. Use only on items with a minmum value of $2"
What the–?
Will these coupons work on an item that costs less than $2?
Or are they just hoping the cashier stops the use of the coupon?
K, I do not think so in that case. If the coupon states you have to purchase a said amount in order to use the coupon then the cashier should not accept the coupon if you did not purchase a $2 or more item.
It should work. You can most likely use any coupon on any product as long as the first series of numbers are the same. It has nthing to do with the price. In one store in my area they had a tear pad for buy 1 product and get another product for free. I bought the free prodcut onle and used the coupon with no issues.
im in chicago…..how do i find stores that double or triple…my niece is in IN and Krogers does both,….but there is no Krogers in Chicago…
this is very useful to any one. thank you so much and wish you all the best!

This happened to me just the other night at my Meijer (Springboro Pike). The cashier was very nice & told me she’d have to key in by hand my Betty Crocker frosting coupon because it said “Do not double”. She asked me if I was OK with that. I said sure since thats what the coupon stated. So, I paid .50 for some frosting rather than getting it for free. I could have just given the frosting back but I wanted it.
Thanks for the useful info Cindy!
I’ve only had 1 cashier stop coupons from doubling. I didn’t realize what happened- that the coupons said “do not double” (it was at Kroger) and so I asked a manager if they still doubled (concerned their coupon policy had changed,) and she gave me money to make up the difference. She said, the coupons said “Do not double” but we allow them to because we still get the same amount.” Then, she said, “I don’t know why she (the cashier) stopped them!”
I have had cashiers at Meijer on Springboro Pike also manually type in a coupon that says “Do Not Double” to prevent the computer from doubling automatically. I have been very disappointed with Meijer lately and have begun taking more of my business to Kroger and other stores rather than get aggravated when entering a Meijer. I’ll only go there now when its a really good deal…and Meijer used to be my store of choice. Sad.
Sarah, I have found that the Kettering Meijer is more coupon friendly than the one on Springboro Pike. When ever I can I go to the same check-out lady every week. She knows me and makes sure all of my coupons scan.
I go to the one in Kettering, too, but when I can go to the one by Wright State, that one is the best! They are just more friendly!
Last Saturday I made a quick run to Meijer to get some more “free” foods. Some of my coupons that said do not double on them did not. I went to the u scan and you know how much fun that can be with coupons. I had 2 orders to do so I thought that would have been easier. Anyways, the cashier that runs the u scan said that some of the coupons now are not doubling now. I said well then I will just have to shop at Kroger where I don’t have any trouble with my coupons doubling. I prefer Meijer over Krogers, but I will go where I will save the most. She didn’t like that answer and told me that it was the coupon source that prohibits it from doubling.
